Rice hulls are the dried outer husks of rice grain, supplied loose in a one pound quantity. They are lightweight, low in nutrient value and slow to break down, which is what makes them useful as a bulk physical amendment rather than a feed or fertilizer.

Growers blend them into potting mixes and hydroponic media to improve aeration and drainage while retaining some moisture. They are also used as a mulch and as a renewable filler and carbon source in pyrotechnic and craft applications, where the hollow structure and clean burn are the properties of interest.
