Luminol is a chemical compound (C8H7N3O2) that exhibits chemiluminescence, producing a green glow when mixed with an appropriate oxidizing agent and a catalyst. Its primary use is in forensic science for detecting trace amounts of blood at crime scenes, as the iron in hemoglobin acts as a catalyst for the reaction. When a luminol solution is sprayed onto a surface, it reacts with the iron in blood, producing a short-lived green-white luminescence that can be seen in the dark, even if the blood is not visible to the naked eye or has been cleaned. This sensitivity allows detection of blood even when highly diluted.
Beyond forensics, luminol has diverse applications in biomedical and clinical research. It is used in immunoassays, blotting techniques (such as Western blotting), and the detection of reactive oxygen species and metabolic pathways. Luminol-based chemiluminescence (LCL) assays are employed to quantify various molecules, including proteins, carbohydrates, DNA, RNA, and specific compounds like vitamin C in seminal plasma or choline-containing phospholipids. It is also used to monitor antioxidants and detect trace metals. In pharmaceutical research, luminol serves as a biological tracer and in reporter gene-based assays.
