is primarily used as an acetylating agent in various industrial and chemical processes. Its largest application is in the conversion of cellulose to cellulose acetate, which is used in photographic film, cigarette filters, textile fibers, and plastic film and sheet. It is also a key reagent in the production of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) through the acetylation of salicylic acid. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used for the synthesis of other drugs such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen.
In the starch industry, acetic anhydride is used to produce modified starches, including E1414, E1420, and E1422, which are used as food additives. It serves as a reagent in organic synthesis for acetylating alcohols, amines, and aromatic compounds, forming products like ethyl acetate and acetophenone. It is also used to prepare other acid anhydrides and mixed anhydrides, such as acetyl nitrate.
Beyond these applications, acetic anhydride is used as a wood preservative via autoclave impregnation to create durable timber , and as a dehydrating agent in the manufacture of explosives like HMX and RDX. It is also employed in the production of vinyl acetate monomer, a precursor for paints and adhesives, and in the synthesis of esters used as solvents for inks and coatings. Additionally, it is used in research laboratories for derivatization procedures, including the analysis of amino acids and the modification of glycoproteins.
